Online Safety

As children move up through school, their access to various types of technology increases, and it stands to reason that their exploration and curiosity increases too. The positives of the digital world overwhelmingly outweigh the negatives but children, schools and parents all need to be aware of various online risks. At St Clement's & St John's CE Infant School, we teach children about online safety in every year group at an age-appropriate level as part of the Computing and PSHE curriculum. The safe use of social media and the internet will also be covered in other subjects where relevant. We use assemblies/worships to raise pupils’ awareness of how to engage with online content and navigate the internet responsibly and safely, and we may also invite speakers to talk to pupils about this.

Keeping Children Safe Online

We take online safety seriously and have measures in place to help protect pupils while using technology in school:

  • Internet filtering systems are used on school devices
  • Supervised access to online content and resources
  • Clear expectations for safe and responsible use of technology (acceptable use agreement)
  • Regular staff training on online safety and safeguarding

‘1 in 5 internet users in the UK are children.’

Advice for Children

We encourage all children to remember these simple rules:

  • Always tell an adult if something online makes you feel uncomfortable or worried: ‘block, report, tell’.
  • Never share personal information such as your name, address, school or passwords.
  • Be kind and polite when talking to others online.
  • Stop and think before clicking on links or buttons.
  • Remember that not everyone online is who they say they are.
  • Prioritise your health and take regular screen breaks.

Advice for Parents and Carers

Parents and carers play a vital role in helping children stay safe online. We recommend that you:

  • Talk regularly with your child about their online activities.
  • Keep devices in shared family spaces where possible.
  • Monitor age-restrictions and review content to ensure it is age-appropriate.
  • Use parental controls and privacy settings.
  • Agree boundaries for screen time and online use.
  • Encourage children to speak up if something doesn’t feel right.

Digital Leaders

At St.Clement's we have a small team of Digital Leaders working with Mrs Arnull to help support a whole school awareness to online safety.  Now technology and online activities have become an everyday part of our lives.  We believe educating children how to be respectful and stay safe online is so important.

Please see the minute from our meeting to see what we have been doing in school.

Safer Internet Day 2023

The Digital Leaders had a great time going to each class, sharing their Top Tips about online safety.

All the children learnt about making conversations about life online through a story called ‘Hanni and the Magic Window’.  During the afternoon, children enjoyed learning activities by acting out the story and discussing apps they use on devices.  Children also learnt about whom a trusted adult is and who to talk to if they need help about something they have seen online.

Celebrating Safer Internet day

The Digital Leaders did a fantastic job sharing their Online Safety Top tips with the children as the went round the school.

All the children had fun wearing a splash of blue to promote conversation.  The
children learnt about being a positive gamer and asking a grown up for help when using the internet through a story called 'Digiduck and the Magic Castle'.

Internet Safety Day

Internet Safety

At St Clement's and St John's Internet Safety is very important to us. We have active e-safety policies in place and we present internet safety lessons to all our classes. As part of this delivery we also have external specialists present to the students to give them the best possible protection.

Internet Safety Quick Tips:

  1. NEVER post personal information, such as a phone number, home number, address, or your location on any social networking sites/applications.
  2. NEVER meet in person with anyone you first “met” on the internet. If someone asks to meet you, tell your parents or guardian right away. People may not always be who they tell you they are.
  3. CHECK with your parents before you post pictures of yourself or others online.
  4. DON'T respond to mean or rude messages. You may need to delete friends who continuously bother you or post things that are not appropriate.
  5. NEVER share your password with anyone, including your best friend. The only people who should know your password are your parents or guardian.
  6. ALWAYS use the privacy settings of social networking sites.
  7. If anything makes you feel uncomfortable online, while gaming or when using your phone, talk with your parents or guardian right away.
