Intent
At St Clement’s & St John’s Infant School, PE is an integral part of our curriculum. Our vision is for all children to develop the knowledge, skills and competence to excel in a broad range of sports and physical activities. We also strive for our children to develop the knowledge, skills and capabilities necessary for good mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing now and within their future. We aim for all children to be physically active for sustained periods of time and to be able to make informed decisions to lead healthy and active lives.
The aim of teaching PE at our school is:
Implementation
At St Clement’s and St John’s Infant School, teachers plan and teach high quality PE lessons and sporting activities through the GetSet4PE scheme which incorporates a ‘whole school values and a whole child approach’ (GetSet4PE, 2020). The scheme ensures that all children develop their knowledge and skills in a progressive manner throughout the school and participate in two high quality PE lessons each week, covering two sporting units every half term. Children also learn about healthy lifestyles including the benefits of regular exercise with the Jigsaw PSHE unit ‘Healthy Me’ covered in the spring term of each year (see PSHE/JIGSAW for more detail).
At St Clement’s we also provide opportunities for all children to join in with, local sports competitions and extra-curricular clubs and activities that are inclusive, enjoyable and increase children’s physical activity.
Friday mornings at St Clement’s focus on fitness for the whole family with our ‘Fitness Friday’. As the children arrive at school with their family members, they are encouraged to join the school staff in an activity such as running or dancing. This provides an excellent opportunity for the children to get involved in some exercise before the school day even begins.
Impact
We aim for all children to achieve age related expectations across all units of learning within PE. ‘We strive to educate both our children and families to develop a greater understanding on how to live healthy lifestyles and make healthy choices. We are dedicated to ensuring healthy minds, as well as bodies and will continue to support our children's well-being. We have strong links with local clubs and partnerships within our community to ensure the children and families receive the support and knowledge they need’ (GetSet4PE, 2020).
The outcomes of the teaching of PE across the school can be seen within the online portal for GetSet4PE.
The assessment of PE is ongoing. The teachers regularly assess through observations and pupil discussions about what the children have learnt. This information then informs the teachers with their lesson activities and differentiation.
